Do three flags unite Australia or divide the country?

This opinion invites Australians to consider whether flying three flags supports national unity or whether it risks creating division, and whether this is an important discussion for the country to have.

For many years, Australia has had one national flag to represent the country and its people. The flag has been a symbol of shared citizenship, shared laws, and a common future. Today, it is becoming more common to see three flags flown together: the Australian flag, the Aboriginal flag, and the Torres Strait Islander flag.

Some Australians believe that flying all three flags helps bring the country together. They say it recognises the history of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who lived on this land long before Australia became a nation. From this view, showing all three flags is a sign of respect and inclusion, while still being part of one country.

Other Australians feel unsure about having more than one national symbol. They believe a country is usually united by one shared flag. Some worry that flying several flags may focus more on differences between people rather than what Australians share in common.

There are also concerns about how difficult it can be to talk about this topic. Some people feel afraid to ask questions or share their views because they do not want to offend others or be misunderstood. When people cannot talk openly and respectfully, division can grow.

This discussion is not only about flags. It is really about what unity means in Australia today. Does unity come from one shared symbol, or from recognising different histories within one nation? And can symbols alone create unity, or does unity come from fairness, respect, and how people are treated in everyday life?

Australians have different views on this issue. Listening to each other and allowing respectful discussion may be an important step toward understanding and unity.

“I strongly believe a country should be united under one flag only. For example, at Olympic ceremonies or other international sporting events, Australia is represented by one flag. This shows pride, patriotism and respect on the world stage. Three flags create division and reflect government focus on identity politics.”
